This herbal superstar can be found in text throughout centuries; from ancient greece to the native americans. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) has a shining reputation for stopping bleeding, as well as rich history in cultural practices and rituals.
It was said that the great warrior Achilles used this plant during times of battle to stop the bleeding of injured men; legend says that this is where the Latin name came from! This ally was even out in the field during the Civil war; although it was called "soldier's woundwort" during that period of time. The Chinese are known for consuming Yarrow for various ailments and they also use the dried stems in a divination practice called the 'I Ching'.
In Sussex and Wicklow traditions, young women call on the flowers to help them find their true love. Clearly, this plant has been well loved around the world and deeply honored for thousands of years.
